Crystal balls are hard to come by these days, so instead the internet era has come up with the concept of "advanced analytics". Big data holds the key to where investment is likely to pay off within a reasonable time-frame. The only problem is numbers, hundreds of millions of them: finding the critical numbers that drive profitable investment is like trying to find that proverbial needle in a haystack. To weave a pathway through the numbers, IHS Maritime & Trade has developed a capacity forecast model that draws on Big data, but incorporates insight from three business lines - Energy Insight, Operational Excellence, and Economics and Country Risk. The result is something we at IHS Maritime & Trade believe is unique for our industry: a graphical depiction of future ship capacity trends that is gloriously simple to read and yet is underpinned by a wealth of world-class data that is quite staggering in its scope.
