Germany's Alfred Wegener Institute for Polar and Marine Research (AWI) is carrying out a coastal permafrost erosion research project in Canada -Kongsberg Geoacoustics lent a hand. Funded by the Helmholz Association and AWI, the project will study the stark seasonal contrasts in coastal dynamics on Arctic coasts. During the winter the coast is protected by sea- and land-fast ice from wave erosion, but in the absence of ice the coast is exposed to mechanical and thermal processes with high erosion rates.
