But its official name is black carbon (BC, though sometimes 'elemental carbon' or 'graphite carbon') and it's the stream of solid particles emitted during incomplete combustion. Marine diesel engines are a significant source, although not the major one, and at the 62nd session of the IMO's Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC), held in July 2011, a plan was adopted to address the impact on the Arctic of emissions of BC from international shipping. The Institute of Marine Engineering, Science & Technology (IMarEST), in association with the International Council on Clean Transportation (ICCT), conducted an in-depth review of BC measurement science with the support of international experts in the field.
