Contractors have moved from traditional dredging operations and, as technology progresses, have increasingly become involved in projects demanding a high degree of accuracy, such as trenching and rock dumping, investing in the vessels and equipment needed. With resources ashore or in near-shore locations becoming scarcer, however, oil, gas and mining companies have to shift to deeper waters - and if they want to keep up, dredging companies need to do the same, even though it means working at depths greater than 1,000m.
