The 12,000m~3 trailing suction hopper dredger (TSHD), Chang Jiang Kou 01 was launched on 10 September at IHC Merwede's Kinderdijk yard for Yangtze Estuary Waterway Administration Bureau (YEWAB). She's one of a pair and her sister, Chang Jiang Kou 02, is being built at a Chinese yard under a contract between YEWAB and IHC Dredgers signed in July 2008. Why so long before the first launch? IHC Dredgers managing director Bram Roelse explained to guests at the post-launch reception: "The market situation from the start of the contract changed dramatically, with the world experiencing a serious economic standstill."
