Construction of UK Dredging's new 2,300m~3 trailing suction hopper dredger has begun with the official keel laying at the Barkmeijer Shipyards in Stroobos in the Netherlands. The vessel, to be named UKD Orca, will be registered in the UK at the Port of Cardiff Keel laying is a bit of a misnomer these days; in fact any sign of a 'keel' is a long way off at this stage. What actually occurred was the marking of a deck plate with the ship's official classification society number - in this case Bureau Veritas. The event was officially recorded by BV as the start of construction of the vessel.
