When the Vikings were striking fear into their neighbours, Nakskov was already famous as a port, mainly for the herring trade. But as the centuries rolled by, her winding, though safe, 30km access channel through Nakskov Fjord and around Slot0 Island, became more a burden than an advantage. In the 19th century, with the increasing size and speed of ships and the importance of sticking to schedules becoming more prevalent in maritime trade, the long channel proved to be a significant disadvantage for the port ... which gradually lost its importance.
