On 17 June the European Parliament agreed compromise text for a new Waste Framework Directive that excludes dredged material and finally aligns the EU with international law. As CEDA, the European Dredging Association (EuDA), the European Sea Ports Organisation (ESPO) - and DPC- have been pointing out for years, the EU's original directive was in breach of the London Convention that covers the placement of dredged material. It's resulted in convoluted permitting for what should have been straightforward port reclamations and maintenance, anti-flood measures and more - and all because perfectly clean, usable material was classed as 'waste' rather than 'resource'.
