The Western Australian Port of Fremantle's facing a major urban encroachment battle as proponents of a $10Bn island development adjacent to North Quay forge ahead with an intensive campaign to seek public support. The Venice-style North Port Quay project, which is backed by some of Perth's leading property developers, will sit on six islands across 345ha of seabed just north of the port, with a 3.5km seawall surrounding homes for 20,000 people, 10,000m~2 of office space, two schools, 2,200 boat pens, a five-star hotel and a cultural/ performing arts centre.
