Although small, the Port of Teignmouth in Devon on the UK's southwest coast is a vital asset to the local economy, ideally positioned to handle increasing specialist trade with the EU as well as lucrative exports of 'ball clay' mined in nearby Dartmoor. The old Teign estuary port dates back to 1887 and has seen so much long-term use that in recent years the dock structure had become seriously deteriorated. In April 2005, Dean & Dyball Construction (DDC) was commissioned to carry out a £5M refurbishment to bring the port up to modern standards, giving it three new berths able to accommodate much larger vessels.
