摘要

This golden anniversary brings back memories of the early days of The Econometric Institute (EI) that seem worth placing on record before eyewitnesses disappear... It also provides an opportunity to express a personal debt of gratitude. In 1958, I came back from the USA with a PhD degree complemented by a short teaching experience at Carnegie Tech (now Carnegie-Mellon), and I started looking for a job in Belgium. My wife and I had agreed to try it out for 2 years. If no satisfactory opportunity arose within that period, we would go back to the USA (hopefully to Carnegie, which had provided an exceptionally stimulating research environment). Without Rotterdam's Econometric Institute, we might well have given up on Europe... Let me explain.
