摘要

Through a comparative analysis of ‘The Palace of Illusions,’ a pavilion sponsored by the Saint‐Gobain glass company for the 1900 Exposition and shorts by Auguste and Louis Lumière screened at the same Exposition, this essay examines how full‐length mirrors and their proliferation throughout urban settings influenced early film. I suggest that large mirrors, those that commonly embellished display windows throughout modern Paris, both prefigured and influenced early cinema, as they framed and spectacularized representations of modern life, as did early moving pictures.
