摘要

The early century animal welfare movement was a very visual phenomenon. From lectures illustrated with lantern slides to graphic images depicting acts of cruelty towards animals, this reform movement relied heavily on visual culture in both a pedagogical and performative sense. While animal imagery is certainly to be expected in campaigns dealing with the health and well-being of dogs, cats, horses and other nonhuman creatures, my research on this topic points to more complex representational strategies informing this practice. I argue, for instance, that the selection of images published by early animal welfare activists often provided spaces in which ideas around ‘animal voice’ and ‘animal agency’ could be imagined, often in ways that were contradictory to the dominant discourses of the animal welfare movement.View full textDownload full textKeywordsvisual culture, animal welfare, agency, activismRelated var addthis_config = { ui_cobrand: "Taylor & Francis Online", services_compact: "citeulike, netvibes, twitter, technorati, delicious, linkedin, facebook, stumbleupon, digg, google, more", pubid: "ra-4dff56cd6bb1830b" }; Add to shortlist Link Permalink http://dx.doi.org/10.1080/17460654.2011.601162
