Upper Khvalynian Sediments at Lower Reaches of the Volga River

In the terminal Pleistocene, the Caspian basin was subjected to the Khvalynian transgression that flooded spacious lowland areas. The transgression occurred in two phases: the early Khvalynian phase, with the maximal sealevel rise up to an altitude of m, and the late Khvalynian phase, with the sealevel rise up to an altitude of 0 m. The geological structure and paleogeo-graphic sedimentation settings of lower Khvalynian sediments are sufficiently well known. In contrast, upper Khvalynian sediments at lower reaches of the Volga River have been insufficiently studied. According to radiocarbon data, they accumulated over a short period (2-3 ka) that was, however, rich in paleogeo-graphic events. The main event is marked by the enigmatic formation of Baer mounds.
