Interannual Variability of Water Temperature in the Chukchi Sea

The warm Pacific water passing through the Bering Strait essentially affects the thermal regime and circulation of water in the Chukchi Sea and participates in the formation of the oceanographic regime in the entire Arctic basin. Pacific water spreads in the Chukchi Sea as two main currents. The first current (Gerald branch) extends to the north-northwest, while the second, more intensive current (Alaska branch) follows northeastward along the Alaska coast. Their divergence is believed to occur north of 68° N and is well traced by the ice tongue descending southward in the 170° W area. One more current following toward the Long Strait (the Long Branch) may be distinguished in the presence of steady southeastern wind. In some years, the Siberian coastal current brings fresh water from the East Siberian Sea through the Long Strait to the Chukchi Sea. The sealevel rise by ~0.5 m in the northern Pacific is the main cause of the propagation of the Pacific water current into the Arctic basin through the Bering Strait. Results related to the influence of wind field on the Pacific water flow in the Bering Strait and Chukchi Sea are ambiguous. The amount of annual heat brought by the Pacific waters is sufficient for ice melting over about one-half of the Chukchi Sea area. Variations of the surface water temperature in the Chukchi Sea during the cold (1947-1956) and warm (1957-1966) seawater periods are discussed in [5].
