Prognosis of the Distribution of Organic Matter in Maikop Sediments of the Black Sea Region

Many geochemical studies of organic matter (OM) in samples from boreholes and outcrops along the periphery of the Black and Azov seas, offshore wells, and clayey breccias of mud volcanoes show that sediments of the Maikop Formation (Oligocene-Early Miocene) can be considered one of the main source rocks. However, the distribution of oil and gas pools suggests that the Maikop sediments also represent the main reservoir rocks in the study region: 55% of the total number of pools (250) are confined to Miocene sediments; 17%, to the lower part of the Maikop Formation (Oligocene) and Paleocene. It should be noted that, owing to the sufficient maturity of OM and favorable conditions of its migration and accumulation, at least 70% of petroleum pools can be classed as syngenetic formations relative to reservoir rocks.
