Traditionally, the output voltage of a switching regula tor has been set by the feedback potential divider re sistors, which are hard-soldered onto the circuit board at assembly time. The benefit of this method of output voltage "programming" is that it occurs before the board is ever powered up, with obvious safety benefits. The most common use of voltage scaling is to combine this with "clock throttling" to provide different operating voltages and clock frequencies for different operating modes of the load. High-volume special applications such as the CPU market can support custom designed solutions for voltage-scaling, but a more general, broader rancre solution creates further issues that need to be addressed.
