The development of economically viable, feature-rich, smart sensor technologies has been supported by continued advances in microelectronics and the recent release of industry standards. Broadly based interest in remote monitoring and control through networking technologies has driven the need for advanced, smart sensor features including standardized network connectivity, common interfaces, auto-identification, compensation and embedded electronic data sheets. Some of them have been included in various sensors and transducers during the past 20 years, but mostly as proprietary features. Each smart sensor manufacturer provided users with different information, although the type of information needed to deploy connected, smart sensor applications was fundamentally similar across applications and sensor categories. The user was confronted with a steep learning curve regarding the type and format of data provided by each manufacturer. This made it difficult to interface smart sensor components to external networks.
