OEMs Can Turn Down the Heat with Advances in High-Wattage External Power Supplies

Excessive heat means death for electronic compo-nents—it is that simple. The more power that is wanted from a power supply, the warmer it is going to run. And while engineers can't break the laws of physics, they have certainly done a great job of bend-ing them. Excessive heat has traditionally limited con-siderations for using high-wattage (more than 70 W) external power supplies in particularly sensitive electronic devices. But, recent advances in external power supply technology have turned down the heat and opened users to the benefits of high-wattage external power. Thanks to this improved technology, high-wattage external power supplies can now operate at 90 percent efficiency while increasing Mean Time Between Failure (MTBF) to more than one million hours, compared with average MTBF for fan-cooled internal power supplies of 50,000 hours. Internal power supply life is limited by the life of its weakest link—the fan. By qualifying a high-wattage external power supply, OEMs have the flexibility to easily revise product designs, extend product life and adapt to changing market demands.
