Nonlocal coherence in the living world

Coherence of a kind that was hitherto known only at the microscale has surfaced in recent years at the macroscale: quasi-instant "nonlocal" correlation among the parts or elements of the observed system. This kind of coherence obtains also in the living world. Biological phenomena of nonlocal coherence can be analytically segmented into an intraorganic and a transorganic form. Statistical considerations suggest that in the absence of such coherence living species are not likely to have evolved to the presently observed diversity and complexity within the known evolutionary timeframes. Nonlocal coherence implies the presence of a correlation-inducing field, lending substance to the recent revival of interest in biological field theories. In view of the applicability of the field concept to coherence in other (e.g. microphysical and cosmological) domains, fresh perspectives open for the unification of biological and physical phenomena.
