摘要

Western Myall (Acacia papyrocarpa) and Sugarwood (Myoporum platycarputn) are important species in the chenopod shrublands of South Australia, providing a habitat for native animals, and food and shelter for sheep on pastoral land. Both species are susceptible to sheep grazing (Lange & Purdie 1976; Tiver & Andrew 1997), which is why grazing management is important for long-term survival of both species. Studies in eastern South Australia have shown that sheep are the most important vertebrate affecting long-term regeneration of trees and shrubs (Tiver & Andrew 1997). When sheep are excluded from an area and rabbit populations are low, new shrub seedlings can rapidly appear (Silander 1983), but the pattern of recruitment and the influence of grazing varies among plant species (Crisp 1978). Sugarwood may or may not be at less risk from grazing than Western Myall.
