Exotic willows causing siltation and eutrophication of creeks and streams in the Wimmera's upper catchment in Victoria are being removed from the landscape as part of major eradication programme targeting the pest tree. Wimmera Catchment Management Authority contractors have cut and painted herbicide on several species of willow trees, declared weeds of national significance, in Elmhurst and Mount Cole districts along the Wimmera River, Gienpatrick Creek and Shepherds Creek. Because willows grow readily from cuttings, teams are also burning the debris on site. Project teams treated almost 7 km and 10 ha of Wimmera waterway willows from May 2008. The work was on private property and required cooperation and input from landowners, whose contribution and help has made this project possible.
