The ONS has revised down UK economic growth yet again in the latest National Accounts, with GDP now estimated to have risen by less than trend in each of the last four quarters and by only 1.5% in the year to 2005Q2. As a result, the output gap - the overhang of spare capacity in the economy - has risen to around 1% of GDP, having closed in mid-2004. Moreover, survey evidence suggests that growth is likely to remain slightly below trend in the second half of 2005, implying that GDP this year will be only 1.7% up on 2004 - the lowest annual growth since 1992. Indeed, it is not until late 2006 that we expect growth to get back to its 2.5% trend rate.
