摘要

The last few months have seen a marked deterioration in sentiment regarding the prospects for global growth. Equity markets have stalled at levels still way down on their peaks and, while growth in the US has been robust, the prospects going forward appear to have deteriorated: investment remains in the doldrums and consumer confidence has fallen to below its level in the wake of the terrorist attacks of 11 September 2001. Weaker confidence is also a feature in Europe, while Japan remains mired in deflation. Does this mean the recovery we hoped for will not materialise, and the world will go into the 'double-dip' recession that has attracted a great deal of press?
