A year is said to be an eternity in politics. In Bangladesh, it seems the batting of an eye. On January 5th colourful, sand-laden lorries reappeared on the streets of the capital, Dhaka. It was the first anniversary of a deeply flawed general election won by the ruling Awami League, thanks in large measure to a boycott by the main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party (bnp). A year ago the lorries confined Khaleda Zia, a former prime minister and the bnp's leader, to her house in suburban Dhaka. This week it was her office (pictured, above) that the lorries blocked, backed up by the police, locking Mrs Zia inside for days on end-for her own protection, they said.
