How should Germany present itself to the world? In 2016 the German government will give an answer of sorts when it decides the fate of one of Berlin's more extraordinary construction projects: the rebuilding of the royal palace, the Stadtschloss. Once the city's central architectural reference point, the original baroque palace was demolished by East Germany's communist regime, which replaced it with a parade-ground-cum-car-park and its own parliament and entertainment complex. After German unification in 1990 a Hamburg-based aristocrat and businessman launched a campaign to rebuild the palace. The Bundestag was eventually persuaded to approve most of the funds for a new cultural centre. A wacky grassroots initiative became a national project.
