摘要

Cheeta Camp, a suburb of Mumbai, is home to many poor migrants from other parts of India. It is not an obvious place to look for evidence of a financial revolution. But a walk down an alley, past unteth-ered goats and chickens, takes you to a small shop with a counter and a desk out front. This is a service point for the State Bank of India (sbi), the largest of the government-owned banks that dominate India's finance. The outlet is run by Geosansar, a company that specialises in offering financial services to the poor. At the height of a recent financial-inclusion drive led by Narendra Modi, India's prime minister, more than 30 new accounts were opened each day at this modest banking outpost. Across India as a whole, around 125m such accounts were opened in just six months.
