The coming year could well determine who becomes the next president of France. Although the election is not until 2017, a proxy first round will take place in 2016. The reason for this is the seismic force of Marine Le Pen, leader of the populist National Front (fn). Unless the mood shifts radically, she is likely to come top in the first round of voting in 2017. This will turn 2016 into a contest to determine whom she faces in the run-off-and so who will succeed Francois Hollande. Ms Le Pen will start the year fresh from a strong showing at elections in December 2015 to France's 13 new regions. Her best hope is to grab two from the left: Nord-Pas-de-Calais-Picardie and Provence-Alpes-Cote d'Azur. Victory in either would shake France, and give her both a local laboratory in which to showcase her policies and a powerful megaphone with which to blast out her message. This will be all about the defence of France: its sovereignty (from Brussels), its borders (from migrants), its industry (from globalisation) and its secular character (from "Islamification").
