How fast dinosaurs grew up may not sound a subject that matters much to the modern world. But perhaps it does, for it may illuminate a wider problem: sloppi-ness in scientific procedures. As he reports in plos one this week, when Nathan Myhrvold, an amateur palaeontologist, attempted to replicate the findings of several papers on dinosaur growth, he was sometimes unable to do so. Dr Myhrvold is no ordinary amateur. He helped found Intellectual Ventures, a firm that buys and licenses patents. It has generated controversy over the years from critics who suggest it is guilty of "trolling" (that is, being more interested in extracting payments from people who may have infringe d the patents it holds than in employing those patents to develop useful products); the firm denies the charge.
