Harry quebert is a struggling part-time writer who, like others before and since, exchanges the distractions of New York for a quiet life in rural New England. He heads to Somerset, New Hampshire, and almost immediately falls in love with Nola, a beautiful local girl. He is 34, she is 15. One night she climbs out of her bedroom window and disappears. Thirty-three years later Nola's body is dug up in the grounds of Quebert's seaside home. Also in the grave is a leather bag with a manuscript copy of the novel that has made his name in the intervening period. Ouebert, the sole suspect, is quickly arrested.
