This should be a good year for America's Republicans. The gop already holds a majority of the state legislatures that divide by party (27 to the Democrats' 17, with five split between the two parties); a majority of state governorships (29 red to 21 blue); and a majority in the House of Representatives (233 to 199). It could increase all those numbers in elections this autumn (see chart 1 on next page), and polls suggest that it is more likely than not to take control of the Senate, too. If that happens, Republicans will control everything apart from the house at 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue.
