Across Maputo, in between the crum-bling, colonial-era buildings, luxury apartments and hotel complexes race to the sky. These are visible reminders of Mozambique's stellar economic growth-an average of almost 8% a year over the past 14 years. Yet the country is also riven by political and economic fissures that are unlikely to be resolved by a general election due on October 15th. More worryingly, a vote that has thus far been largely peaceful may yet turn violent once the polls have closed.
