摘要

At least 67 people died in a four-day armed stand-off at a shopping mall in the Kenyan capital, Nairobi, after ten or more members of the Shabab, a militant Islamist group from Somalia that is affiliated with al-Qaeda, seized the building. It was the worst terrorist attack in Kenya since the bombing of the American embassy in 1998. In separate speeches at the un General Assembly the presidents of Iran and America agreed to hold talks about the controversial Iranian nuclear programme. In his speech Barack Obama said that America was still an "exceptional" player in world affairs and that a "vacuum of leadership" would be created if it failed to live up to its obligations. Mr Obama's handling of the crisis in Syria has been criticised for creating such a vacuum.
