No One knew whether Russia's protest movement would fizzle or flare. But when crowds of Muscovites streamed to a rally in the north of the capital on December 24th, the answer was clear. Police put the turnout at 29,000; the organisers said 120,000 people had shown up. Most estimates settled at around 80,000, roughly double the number that attended a warmer protest a fortnight earlier. Both gatherings were a response to the results of a Duma (parliamentary) election crudely fixed by the Kremlin on December 4th. Officially, the ruling United Russia party, led by Vladimir Putin, the prime minister, won almost half the votes. That, reckon analysts, inflated the true figure by between 6% and 15%.
