As guardians of the eu's longest bor-/A.der with Russia, the Finns tend to make prudent choices. So they did in the second round of their presidential election on February 5th. Sauli Niinisto, a centre-right former finance minister, romped home with 63% of the vote, against 37% for the Greens' Pekka Haavisto. Mr Niinisto will be Finland's first conservative head of state since the 1950s. He will also become the first president to come from the same party as the sitting prime minister.
