Ny-alesund is a special place in Arctic science. A huddle of wooden buildings by an icy fjord on Norways's island of Spitsbergen, high in the Barents Sea, it is the world's most northerly civilian settlement. Ten countries-Norway, France, Germany, Britain, the Netherlands, Italy, Japan, South Korea, India and China-have research stations in the village, and scientists from many others pass through. All are welcome to the twin wonders of Arctic conditions and Norwegian management.
