At A Christie's auction in New York this month, a painting known as Ocean Park 848 fetched $13.5m, a record for a work by Richard Diebenkom, a Californian artist who died ini993. The 1971 abstract painting had been certified as genuine by the Richard Diebenkom Foundation in Berkeley. Less fortunate are the owners of more than 200 purported Diebenkom paintings and drawings that the foundation's authentication board declined to certify.
