These are unhappy days in Catalonia. Outside the regional parliament in Barcelona recently stood a picket of noisy secessionists, including a bare-breasted woman with a separatist flag around her neck. A road was blocked by public-health workers fighting cuts. An earlier traffic snarl was caused by demonstrators cutting access roads into the city. Catalonia has a long separatist tradition, but the anger in Barcelona has more to do with the euro crisis than with an independence movement that won only modest support in a recent informal referendum.
