For once the soothsayers were right. Britain's gdp rose by 0.5% in the first quarter, an annualised rate of 2%. The increase was in line with forecasts and would be judged respectable had it not come after a fall in the final months of 2010, when snow kept customers away from hotels, restaurants and other opportunities for spending (see chart).
