The 2011 Taiwan Excellence Award saw the first time in the event's 19-year history that ten gold medals were presented. An international panel of judges marveled over the innovation and diversity of this year's winners, which spanned the electronics, automotive, and recreational products industries. The awards showcased the island's growing reputation as an international brand leader with a wide range of high profile companies. First-time Taiwan Excellence Award judge Don Hideaki Iwatani spoke at the Taipei awards ceremony on how the winners changed his concepts of Taiwan's industrial development. "I'm from Japan and we've felt for a long time that Japan leads Taiwan, that Japan is Taiwan's teacher," said the former Panasonic Consumer Electronics CEO. "But I sit here at this ceremony and feel that I'm among competitors."
