Artists and writers are cannibals. The muse is the figure that suggests some lunches bite back — or decline to be completely digested. But not all are as tough as the unassailable deity painted here by the Renaissance artist Cosimo Tura. This is one of the nine original Muses of Greek mythology. She's Calliope, the muse of epic poetry. Unless, of course, she's Euterpe, the musical muse. Or Polyhymnia, the muse of agriculture. Tura has been promiscuous with his iconography. Perhaps he wants to show who's master — art descends from the muses, Tura tames these women by scrambling their identities.
