Plane crashes are all too common in Alaska, a state where the distances are gigantic and small puddle-jumpers are a routine form of transport. In 1978 Ted Stevens survived a crash that killed his first wife. On August 9th he was one of five people killed when a single-engine plane hit a mountainside.
