There is no keeping away from Ohio in the autumn of an election year. It is a whole America in miniature, with dying post-industrial Cleveland balanced by booming white-collar Columbus, with the rich farmland around Cincinnati in the west contrasting with the sad decaying steel towns along the Ohio River to the east. No other state captures the national mood quite so conveniently.
