"The American people did not vote for gridlock," intoned Barack Obama after his first meeting with senior Republicans since the midterm elections last month. So far, however, they are getting something fairly close to it. The 111th Congress's biggest achievement since it embarked on a final, "lame-duck" session three weeks ago has been to advance an uncontroversial bill on food safety (and even this may yet be derailed by a procedural glitch).
