Sent to cover the popular protests centred on Tiananmen Square in Beijing in 1989, Stuart Franklin of Magnum Photos found himself recording the evolution of a popular uprising. Part protest, part rock festival, the early spirit of Tiananmen Square was captured as a gesture of exuberant defiance framed against a storm-laden sky.rnFor almost a week Mr Franklin cycled around China's capital city documenting student activity with complete freedom. On June 3rd that changed as the army moved in, using deadly force to clear prot-rnesters from the square. At daybreak, confined to his hotel room with a balcony overlooking Chang'an Avenue, he ducked as a bullet popped a bit of plaster from the railing, and began photographing the scene below. Then a lone figure in a white shirt emerged to stand in the path of a column of tanks in a last act of defiance. Listen to Mr Franklin discussing his photographs, and see a selection, online.
