Over the past six months, we have seen authorities cut rates in response to a credit crunch and to a stockmarket sell-off. We have seen the British government make a £55 billion ($108 billion) commitment to prop up Northern Rock, a medium-sized bank. Even the European Central Bank, which has been hawkish about the level of interest rates, has flooded the money markets.
