In a Republican campaign office in Char-lottesville, Virginia, the signs on the walls captured the mood. "The presidency is no place for on-the-job training," said one, quoting Joe Biden's put-down of Barack Obama during the Democratic primaries. Another notice complained that Mr Obama's supporters had stolen someone's McCain-Palin yard sign, thus violating his First Amendment right to free speech. "Try it again and you will risk finding out what the Second Amendment is all about," it warned. (The Second Amendment is the one about guns.)
