It is 7.30am at Los Angeles International Airport and several hundred people are queuing at United Airline's do-it-yourself check-in machines. The machines work well enough, but many passengers have never used them before and others have questions about their flight. Only two attendants are present, putting labels onto suitcases. One of them explains that they can't help because they do not work for United, and suggests using one of the phones attached to the machines. A voice on the phone tells you that your call will be recorded for customer-service purposes. No one answers.
