摘要

A truism about film stars is that "every-body knows you but nobody knows you". Millions of Americans looked at Ronald Reagan from afar and thought they knew him: the self-deprecating uncle with the certain principles and uncertain memory. Closer to him, people were not so sure. His attention wandered, they whispered; he ignored details and subcontracted policy to underlings; he wasn't the same after he was shot. Did he really know what he was doing?
