Not so many years ago, Investors focused primarily on growth and profitability when evaluating companies. However, the criteria of Investors and society at large are changing as the standards for appraising corporate value evolve. Today's companies must convince stakeholders that they have a viable, long-term future backed by a commitment to fulfilling their corporate social responsibilities (CSR). We at OMRON have welcomed this change in thinking, but wonder why it has taken so long for many to realize the long-term significance for corporate management of providing benefits to society. More than 50 years ago, OMRON adopted the credo that the real purpose of a company's existence is "to work for the benefit of society." This principle has been the compass guiding OMRON Group operations ever since and, together with our origins as a venture company, has provided the two core elements of our corporate DNA. The first is our drive to innovate by drawing inspiration from the potential needs of future society as we envision it—a society where the work of machines is left to machines, and human beings are free to pursue more creative lifestyles. The second is the pioneering spirit to seek out new challenges, generate world firsts and continually outdo ourselves.
